For this week's Fantastic Find, we have J.K. Rowling! One of an inspirational women who is a courageous woman, through the face of adversity, stick with her passion and talents and is successful on her own terms.
Born: July 1965, England
Occupation: Writer, known for the creation of the Harry Potter series
J.K. Rowling's story is a fairy tale for the 21st century. Although her life hasn't been a smooth ride and she certainly has not had it easy, it has been far from completely terrible and difficult. She discusses some of the hardships in her life, such as failure, being jobless and even receiving welfare, but she also discusses the people in her life who helped her get to where she is now. She talks about staying strong through rejection, maintaining healthy relationships and perseverance as key factors to achieving your goals with hard work.
She was a struggling, single mother who was convinced that she would never be successful because no one in her family had ever gone to college. She was diagnosed with clinical depression, and before she knew it, she was divorced and on welfare, with a daughter to support. Then came one of the most cherished characters in modern literature, Harry Potter: a young wizard who has been orphaned, who survives through grit and pluck, and who can speak Parseltongue (a language he did not learn at Hogwarts).
She is the author of the best-selling Harry Potter series of seven novels. The first book, Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone, was published by Bloomsbury in 1997 and has been translated into 55 languages, selling over 120 million copies worldwide. The series is currently the best-selling book series in history, and has been a popular series adapted into films, video games and amusement park attractions.
It's been almost 20 years since we first met the boy wizard, but there are still plenty of kids like me who are discovering Harry for the first time. Even if you've read all the Harry Potter books, there's something new waiting for you in each reading. Each book is filled with details that don't always jump out at first glance and might not all seem to be key to the plot. Yet give them some thought, and they'll help deepen your appreciation of the characters and their world.
Why should you know about her?
Rowling’s “rags to riches” story is one of the most notable of our time. Her resilience during some of her darkest and poorest times allowed her to create one of the best, if not the best, book series during our time. Harry Potter has transformed her life and the lives of children around the world. She was able to use her passion and talent to liberate herself from poverty. Rowling had to balance single motherhood and her career.
Awesome Quote: “It is our choices … that show what we truly are, far more than our abilities.”
